A wonderful way to start any day, or make supper a real Southern treat. Great with apple butter, too.

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup butter, shortening, or margarine
3/4 cup buttermilk

Preparation:
In a bowl sift together flour, baking powder and soda, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt. Cut in butter, shortening, or margarine until mixture resembles course crumbs. Make a well in the center; add buttermilk all at once. Stir just till dough clings together. Put on lightly floured surface push dough gently together and flatten to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with cutter or glass dipping in flour between cuts. Transfer biscuits to a baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes or till golden. Serve warm.
